Baxter Healthcare Corporation announced initiation of a Phase III clinical trial following U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review of its investigational new drug application to evaluate GAMMAGARD LIQUID [Immune Globulin Intravenous (IGIV)], marketed as KIOVIG in European Union, for the treatment of mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease.

Speaking about her own views on assisted dying Baroness Warnock made reference to people with dementia as she publicised her latest book. Neil Hunt, Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Society says, ‘We very much respect Baroness Warnock and her contribution to debate and policy formation over the last 34 years. However we simply cannot believe that given the chance to meet people with dementia who still maintain a high quality of life, that she would hold the same views.

A global call for action to address the growing public health and social care emergency posed by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias to current and future generations has been launched today (World Alzheimer’s Day) by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI).(1) The worldwide effort focuses on a new Global Alzheimer’s Disease Charter urgently calling upon all governments and stakeholders to act now to make Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias a priority.

72 per cent of people cannot name a political party that has clear policies for older people, research by Alzheimer’s Society found yesterday, Thursday, 18 September. Just 13 per cent of people believe Labour has the clearest policies and proposals for older people, while 9 per cent believe it is the Conservatives and only 3 per cent believe it is the Liberal Democrats.

However, dementia currently costs the UK £17 billion a year and there is no cure on the horizon.

Inflammation in the brain resulting from infection or injury may accelerate the progress of dementia, research funded by the Wellcome Trust suggests. The findings, published this week in the journal Biological Psychiatry, may have implications for the treatment and care of those living with dementia. Systemic inflammation - inflammation in the body as a whole - is already known to have direct effects on brain function.
